YORK, Pa. – Frostburg State guard Ronje James is capping her senior season with an impressive exclamation point and Wednesday night's double-overtime come-from-behind victory over York (Pa.) only further added to it.
James tied a school record with 44 points, but more importantly the Bobcats rallied from 17 points down in the second half to slide past York, 78-76, to win for the fifth time in seven games.
Frostburg (6-18, 3-14 CAC) trailed by 17 points on two occasions, the second coming with 8:03 to play, before outscoring York 25-8 over the remainder of regulation to send the game into overtime.
James had a hand in the ending of regulation and both overtimes. She knocked down a jumper with 10 seconds remaining to send the game into the first overtime, hit two free throws with 1:05 left to send the game into the second overtime and broke a 76-76 tie with two free throws with five seconds left to earn the win.
Junior Courtney Young scored 12 points and grabbed seven rebounds, senior Shaniqua Hall posted 11 points and eight rebounds and senior Jasmine Walker pulled down 12 rebounds, her third double-digit effort in the last four games.
However, James' 44 points not only tied a Frostburg record that has stood since 2000, but are the most points scored in a single game in York's Grumbacher Sport and Fitness Center. James added 10 steals and was 15-of-26 (57.6%) from the field, including 12-of-13 (92.3%) at the foul line.
York made more baskets and three-pointers, but the Bobcats were 9-of-12 at the foul line in the second half and 12-of-16 in both overtimes.
The Spartans (11-13, 7-10 CAC) led by six at halftime, 25-19, and used a 20-9 run over the first eight-and-a-half minutes of the second half to build their lead to 17, 45-28.
Following their second 17-point deficit at 8:03, the Bobcats held York to just eight baskets during their late game rally.
York's Morgan Golec led the way with 19 points, followed by Sam Hruz with 13 and Katie Wagner with 11. The Spartans shot 52.7% from the floor but committed 31 turnovers which Frostburg turned into 33 points.
Frostburg State hosts Marymount (Va.) in the regular season finale for both teams this Saturday. The Bobcats will also host Senior Day prior to the 1 p.m. tip-off against the Saints.
