FROSTBURG, Md. – Junior Torrell Goodman led all players with a career-high 24 points, but it wasn't enough as the Frostburg State men's basketball team dropped an 86-83 overtime nail-biter to Southern Virginia, Wednesday night.
The game was so tight from start to finish that both teams finished with four players in double-figures, both squads made 33 baskets and 13 free throws and both teams made exactly 15 baskets in each half. The game also featured 15 ties and 17 lead changes.
The difference came from three-point range where the Knights (5-16, 3-12) made three more than the Bobcats (10-12, 6-9). Southern Virginia's Kevin Walker hit a three-pointer with 2:26 to go in regulation that handed the visitors their first lead, 73-72, since early in the second half. The Knights also knocked down a pair of three-pointers in overtime to seize the early momentum.
But that's not to say Frostburg wasn't without its chances. Goodman hit a jumper with 2:02 to play as FSU regained the lead 74-73. Walker answered with a jumper of his own at 1:48 as SVU surged ahead 75-74.
Inside the final 30 seconds, Frostburg's Nick Smoot stole the ball from Walker and junior Jerel Carter was fouled while trying to make a layup. However, he missed his first free throw and made the second to send the contest into extra time.
Goodman opened OT for Frostburg with a pair of free throws and a jumper with 2:19 showing as he pulled the Bobcats to within one, 80-79. Junior David Patrick kept Frostburg in the contest with back-to-back layups, the second with 13 seconds to go and both his baskets pulled Frostburg to within two points. Following his second layup, Patrick was forced to foul Walker on the in-bounds pass.
Fortunately for FSU, Walker missed the first free throw and made his second to extend the Knight lead to 86-80, giving Frostburg one final chance. On the ensuing trip down the floor, junior Nick Smoot fired up a three-pointer as time expired, but it was off the mark, giving Southern Virginia the win.
Goodman surpassed his previous career-best by 14 points behind 10-of-16 shooting (62.5%). He led all players with 12 first-half points. Carter finished with 14 points, eight rebounds, five assists and three steals. Senior Jabari Kamau chipped in his fourth double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds, while Smoot added 11 points to round out the four scorers in double figures.
Frostburg shot 45.2 percent from the floor (33-of-73) and turned 17 Knight turnovers into 24 points.
Southern Virginia was led in scoring by Michael Neufville's 20 points and eight rebounds. Kevin Walker finished with 16 points and nine assists.
