PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Frostburg State women's basketball team dropped its season opener at La Roche, 82-40, Monday evening.
La Roche (1-0) jumped out to an early 6-0 start, but a three-pointer from freshman guard Megan Kelly and a jumper from senior forward Courtney Young brought the Bobcats (0-1) within one. A dish from junior guard Kache Fields to Kelly for a layup gave the black and red its only lead of the game, 7-6.
Four three-pointers from La Roche broke the game open to give the hosts an 18-7 advantage that they wouldn't relinquish. A made free throw from junior forward Kirsten Rayner cut the Bobcats first quarter deficit to 18-8.
Freshman guard Alanah Roy was 4-for-4 from the free throw line in the second quarter, while fellow freshman guard Bryce Papp hit two of her own, but it wasn't enough as the hosts jumped out to take a 36-16 lead at the intermission.
La Roche kept the pressure on and took a 67-25 advantage heading into the fourth quarter.
Despite a late 7-2 run, the Bobcats fell short at the final horn, 82-40.
Papp led the Bobcats with nine points, while Rayner and Kelly each had seven. Roy posted a team-high five rebounds for FSU.
TiChina Mitchell led the Redhawks with 21 points and 11 rebounds and teammate Sabrina McLin added 20 points and four rebounds for the hosts.
The Bobcats return to action Wednesday, November 18 when they travel to Juniata for a 7:00 pm tipoff.
