SALISBURY, Md. – Frostburg State split a pair of four-set matches at Salisbury University, Saturday. The Bobcats opened the day with a 3-1 loss to the host Sea Gulls, but rebounded with a 3-1 victory over Alvernia.
The split evens Frostburg's overall record at 15-15 while it fell to 3-4 in the CAC.
In the opening match of the day against SU, Frostburg dropped the first two sets before rebounding in the third. The Sea Gulls captured game one 25-16, and the second game, 25-19.
The Bobcats made a charge in the third set as they hit .318 and registered a match-high 17 kills for a 27-25 victory. Salisbury grabbed an 8-2 lead in the early going in set three before Frostburg battled back behind a 9-1 run for an 11-9 lead. Neither team led by more than two the rest of the set and Frostburg captured the game with a kill from sophomore Naya Cheatem.
Salisbury earned the match victory after posting a 25-13 score in the fourth and decisive set.
Cheatem led Frostburg with 18 kills followed by senior Aimee Petrides with 16 and a .333 hitting percentage. Sophomore Madelyn Torres handed out 40 assists and fellow sophomore Lindsey Scepura had 17 digs.
In the second match, Frostburg rallied from an early 1-0 deficit with three-straight wins to take the match.
The Crusaders narrowly edged the Bobcats for a 25-23 game one victory, but it was all Frostburg after that.
Frostburg hit .379 with 15 kills for a 25-18 game two win. FSU then connected on 14 more kills in set three for a 25-20 win and a 2-1 lead. The Bobcats closed out their match with a 25-18 win in the fourth.
Cheatem hit .316 with 17 kills, while Petrides added 15 kills and seven kills. Sophomore Zoe Harris notched 10 kills.
Torres again handed out more than 40 assists, this time with 44 to go along with four digs, three blocks and two kills. Scepura landed 26 digs, while sophomore Karli Grimes posted a season-high 18.
Frostburg State travels to Penn State Harrisburg this Wednesday at 7:00 pm.
