Volleyball Defeats York (Pa.) In Five Sets

YORK, Pa. – The Frostburg State volleyball team battled York (Pa.) to a five-set thriller in Capital Athletic Conference action, and won 3-2, Wednesday evening.
 
The Bobcats improve to 14-14 overall and 3-3 in the CAC, while York (Pa.) falls to 10-15 overall and 2-3 in conference play.
 
Sophomore Naya Cheatem led FSU with a game-high 24 kills and a career-best six blocks. Classmate Sabrina Roberts added a career-best seven blocks, while fellow sophomore Madelyn Torres posted a game-high five service aces and 39 assists for the Bobcats. Sophomore Lindsey Scepura contributed 12 digs in the effort.
 
Frostburg started out slow in game one and trailed 10-3 early on, but quickly turned things around and used a 5-1 run to cut its deficit to 11-8. The Bobcats clung on and scored five of the game's final six points to earn a 25-23 win.
 
Game two saw 12 ties in the score as the Spartans used a decisive 7-2 late-game rally to overcome a tie at 18-18 to take the second set, 25-20.
 
Tied at 5-5 in the third game, York used an early 5-2 streak to take an 8-5 advantage that it wouldn't relinquish the rest of the set. The Spartans used a second 5-2 run to steal game three, 25-18.
 
Down 10-9 in the fourth set, Frostburg took off on a 7-2 tear to take a 16-12 lead. Despite the hosts coming within one, 17-16, the Bobcats never gave up and scored the final three points to take the game, 25-20, and send the match to a fifth set.
 
FSU then earned a quick 5-0 lead in the final set. York (Pa.) started to come back with a 5-2 rally, but the Bobcats used an 8-2 run to put the game away, 15-7.
 
Kelly Cavey led the Spartans with 12 kills and Katerine Graziano added 24 digs for the hosts.
 
FSU returns to action on Saturday, October 24 when it travels to Salisbury for an 11:00 am CAC matchup. The Bobcats will then face Alvernia at 1:00 pm.
