Bobcats Fall Short To York (Pa.)

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State field hockey team dropped a close conference match to York (Pa.), Wednesday afternoon.

Despite falling to the Spartans, 4-3, the Bobcats (8-7, 1-2) played an extremely close match against York (8-7, 2-3) as both teams fought back-and-forth for the entire 70 minutes.

The Bobcats outshot the Spartans 18-17, with all 18 shots landing on goal.

York jumped out to a 2-0 lead early in the first half, when Lindsay Nye hit in a goal in the 9th minute of the game, before scoring again in the 16th minute. Both goals were unassisted.

However, Frostburg State answered when senior Alexandra Darrow found senior Jackie Best inside the circle, and Best knocked one into the cage in the 21st minute to make it a 2-1 match.

York scored again at the 25:32 mark when Ali Posey drilled one past the FSU defense off a penalty corner pass from Morgan Weaver.

FSU came out strong in the second half, when Darrow drilled one into the cage off a rebounded shot only five minutes into the half.

The Spartans answered, scoring in the 43rd minute when Nye scored her third of the night off a pass from Beth Patrick to put York up 4-2.

The duo of Best and Darrow surged into action for the Bobcats once again, this time when Best passed to Darrow inside the circle and Darrow drilled one into the goal in the 54th minute.

This marks Darrows 21st goal of the season, putting her third on the all-time list for goals in a single season. She is only two goals away from tying the record (23), set in 2002 by Kim Faust. Darrow also stands in fourth on the all-time career goals list with 39 goals to date.

FSU goalkeeper Jackie Gover made 13 saves on the night, while York goalkeeper Eve Hauptle made 18 saves and walked away with the win.

The Bobcats return to the field Saturday, October 24 when they travel to Christopher Newport for a game at 11:00 am.
