NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Frostburg State men's soccer team battled No. 6 Christopher Newport to a 0-0 double-overtime tie, Saturday evening.
The Bobcat defense proved it could handle anything thrown its way as CNU continually pounded shots, with none finding the back of the net in 110 minutes of play. The Captains (9-0-4, 2-0-2 Capital Athletic Conference) outshot the Bobcats (8-3-1, 2-1-1 CAC) 18-3 and held a 14-6 advantage in corner kicks, but couldn't capitalize on their opportunities.
Following a red card and playing a man down with eight minutes left in regulation, FSU rallied and stymied every shot and corner from CNU to send the game into overtime.
With just seconds winding down before the end of the first overtime period, Christopher Newport's Preston Key found the back of the net off a misstep from the Bobcat defense, but the goal was called back as time expired before the shot, to keep FSU alive and send the match into a second overtime period.
Senior defender Mitchell Muise stifled the final Captain shot of the game with just 1:43 left in the second overtime period, a cross off a direct kick just outside the 18-yard box, and headed it out of danger to keep the shutout intact for the visitors.
Junior goalkeeper Hassan Mostafa picked up eight saves, including an incredible outstretched dive early in the second half, to help the defense keep the Captains in check.
Mostafa's counterpart Nolan Mann posted two saves for CNU.
Frostburg returns to action Tuesday, September 13 as it travels to York (Pa.) for a conference matchup at 4:00 pm.
