Field Hockey Falls In CAC Opener To St. Mary’s (Md.)

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State field hockey team fell in its Capital Athletic Conference opener to St. Mary's (Md.), 1-0, Saturday afternoon at Bobcat Stadium.

Despite being outshot 12-4, the Bobcats (7-4, 0-1 Capital Athletic Conference) kept the game within reach the whole 70 minutes, but the Seahawks (6-5, 1-0 CAC) ultimately came away with the victory.

Junior keeper Jackie Gover amassed seven saves throughout the contest, three in the first half and four in the second, to keep FSU in the game.

Both teams gave up two penalty corners in the first half, but neither found the back of the net in the opening 35 minutes.

St. Mary's turned things up a notch in the second half and managed to slip past the Bobcat defense at the 45:35 mark. Grace Reingruber found Nicole Lertora for the game's only goal and the eventual game-winner.

Senior Alexandra Darrow led the hosts with two shots, one on goal, while sophomore Ivy Meissner and senior Ashley Johnson each posted a shot.

Seahawk keeper Alyssa Thompson had two saves for the win.

Frostburg returns to action Monday, October 12 when it travels to Lynchburg for a 6:00 pm contest.
