Bobcat Rally Falls Short Against Wesley

FROSTBURG, Md. – Senior Ronje James had 25 points, but a Frostburg State women's basketball rally came up short in a 79-67 loss to Wesley Saturday at Bobcat Arena.

The Wolverines jumped to an early 14-2 advantage less than five minutes into action, but Bobcat senior Shantia White hit two-straight three-pointers to bring FSU within eight with 14:12 to play in the first half.

Wesley then pushed the lead to 20 on a jumper by Roniece Williams with 8:45 left before the intermission, but the Bobcats took off on a 9-2 run and brought the score to 39-26.

A James layup and a made free throw from sophomore Kache Fields in the final minute saw a 45-31 Wesley (10-8, 6-6 CAC) lead at the half.

The first Bobcat rally came on a 12-3 run in the opening minutes of the second half on two three-pointers from junior Bria Jones and made jumpers from James, Fields, and freshman Adjowa Pinkrah. That run cut the Wolverines' lead to just five with 13:37 to play.

Over the next several minutes, the Wolverines went to the free-throw line for a total of eight attempts and back-to-back jumpers pushed the mark to 61-47 in Wesley's favor with 9:16 remaining.

The Bobcats (1-16, 0-12 CAC) final rally of the contest came behind nine-straight points from James as the Bobcats narrowed the deficit to six, 65-59, with 4:51 to play. However, Wesley held off the charge and extended its lead back to 12 at the final buzzer.

James connected on 10-of-18 shots from the floor and went a perfect 4-for-4 from the line to earn her game-high 25 points. Senior Jasmine Walker added 10 points and seven rebounds for the Bobcats.

Brittney Kerns led the Wolverines with 18 points and three rebounds while teammate Brionna Johnson had a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds.

The Bobcats travel to Penn State Harrisburg Wednesday to take on the Lions at 6:00 p.m.
