Bobcats Ground Seahawks in CAC Opener

FROSTBURG, Md. – Junior Erin Worthman assisted on a pair of second half goals nine minutes apart to lead the Frostburg State women's soccer team to a 2-1 win over St. Mary's (Md.) in both team's Capital Athletic Conference opener, Saturday afternoon.

Box Score

The win for the Bobcats lifts them to 7-1-2 on the year and 1-0 in the CAC while the Seahawks slip to 3-4-2 on the season and open conference play 0-1.

After a scoreless first half, St. Mary's struck first. Senior Liz Mosher dribbled the ball down the middle of the field and sent a soft touch to senior Lexy McCarty who was about six yards in front of the goal. McCarty slid it past the diving Bobcat keeper, senior Katie Smith to give the visitors a 1-0 lead in the 65th minute.

At 71:25, Worthman collected the ball at the end line to the right of the net and sent it into the box for freshman Kourtney McLain. McLain one-timed it high to the left hand corner of the net over a leaping Seahawk goalie.

Just over nine minutes later, Worthman took a corner kick for the Bobcats and sent the ball into the box for freshman Melanie Bell who headed into the goal for the eventual game-winner and her second goal of the season.

Smith kept the Seahawks from scoring in the final seven minutes to keep the win intact for Frostburg State. The Bobcat keeper made six saves in the win while her Seahawk counterpart, Sydney Larkin, stopped nine of the Bobcats' 11 shots on net in the loss.

Frostburg outshot St. Mary's 18-8 with Worthman leading the attack with seven shots. Junior Gillian Sawyer led the Seahawks with five shots, four on net.

The Bobcats return to action when they host #4 Carnegie Mellon tomorrow at 4:00 pm.
