BUENA VISTA, Va. – Frostburg State crushed five home runs en route to a series sweep on Southern Virginia, Wednesday, in non-conference softball action.
Box Score – Game 1Box Score – Game 2FSU (11-7) smacked three home runs in an 8-0 shutout victory in game one and kept the momentum going right through the second game of the afternoon. Frostburg posted three more bombs in the nightcap and exploded for a 24-6 win.
Senior Caitlin Lovend kicked the day off with a lead-off home run for a 1-0 lead for the visitors. After a quiet second inning, Lovend hit a single and was brought home by freshman Hannah Tavik who grabbed two RBI with a home run to left center for a score of 3-0 in the third.
FSU tacked on three more runs in the fourth and two more runs in the fifth aided by another Tavik home run for the 8-0 shutout in just five innings.
Lovend, Tavik and sophomore Lauren Capece all went 2-for-3 while Tavik registered four RBI.
Tavik also earned the win in the circle, striking out nine while surrendering just two hits.
In the second game, the Bobcats pounded out a total of 13 hits, 19 RBI and three home runs.
Both teams registered two runs in the first inning but FSU came out swinging in the top of the second. Tavik and sophomore Renay Aubel produced a combined three RBI and Capece grabbed two of her own as she smacked a long ball to left center for a five-run inning to post a 7-2 FSU lead.
SVU (3-18) tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the second but again was halted as the Bobcats erupted for a six-run spurt to open the third frame. Tavik, Aubel and Capece racked up three-straight doubles to grow the FSU lead to 13-4.
The Bobcats halted the Knights in the bottom of the third and Tavik kick started the fourth inning with a solo home run to get the ball rolling for yet another explosive inning. The Bobcats posted five runs in the fourth inning and six runs in the fifth, highlighted by grand slam by freshman Haley Leonhauser.
Southern Virginia would plate three more runs in the final inning but couldn't overcome the 24-9 deficit.
Tavik went 3-for-4 with five RBI, a double and a home run, her third of the day. Aubel finished 2-for-4, contributing four RBI and a double while Capece also went 2-for-4 with three RBI, a double and a home run. Ellsworth registered three hits, three runs and two RBI in her six plate appearances.
Sophomore starter Mary Ann Moore fanned one and allowed just two earned runs as she improves to 4-3 this season.
