No. 19 York Survives at Frostburg

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State men's lacrosse team let the No. 19 York (Pa.) Spartans slip away with a slim 8-7 defeat over the Bobcats in Capital Athletic Conference action, Wednesday evening.

Box Score

In the loss, Frostburg settles to a 9-3 overall record, 2-2 in the CAC while York improves to 9-3 and 3-1 in conference action. The Bobcats, who received votes in the USILA top-25 poll this week, have suffered their only three loses of the season to top-20 ranked teams.

YCP opened up the scoring with back-to-back goals at 8:08 and 6:38, both by sophomore Andrew Gamble. FSU sophomore attack Spenser Love got the Bobcats on the board just two minutes later, assisted by classmate Tate Rolland for a 2-1 lead for the visitors.

The Spartans began the second quarter with two more goals to secure a 4-1 cushion but the hosts made the game interesting by tacking on three-straight scores beginning at 8:32, controlling the momentum until two minutes remained until half. Three separate Bobcats accounted for a goal in the run, juniors Spencer Barnett, Greg Bourne and Devin Colegrove all scored to tie the game at 4-4.

Junior Tyler Hutson slid in a goal with just 12 seconds remaining in the half off an assist by Tyler Davis to allow the No. 19 ranked team to go into halftime up just one, 5-4.

The third frame stayed pretty quiet as neither team could find the net until 4:32 remained. YCP's Hutson and Davis connected once more for a two-goal advantage but Rolland kept the Bobcats close with a score of his own with a minute showing to head into the fourth quarter down just one, 6-5.

The two teams traded goals back and forth in the final frame but the Bobcats, who notched the final goal of the game at 6:48, just couldn't get over that one-point edge, finalizing the game at 8-7.

YCP held a slim advantage in shots (37-30) but Frostburg grabbed the win in the ground ball column (35-31).

Bourne and Love paced the Bobcats with two goals each. On the defensive end, senior Zach Douglas scooped up five ground balls while senior Paul Newman caused three turnovers and junior Korey Bosley caused two. In the net, senior Tyler Haines recorded 14 saves in the loss.

For the Spartans, Hutson and Gamble notched three goals each and the goalie, sophomore Caleb Abney also posted 14 saves.

The Bobcats continue conference play as they travel to Wesley this Saturday for a 12:00 pm contest.
