FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Sophomore Spenser Love netted three goals but the Frostburg State men's lacrosse team fell short in a Capital Athletic Conference tilt to No. 14 Mary Washington, Saturday afternoon.
Box ScoreLove was responsible for knotting the game twice, both occurring in the fourth and final quarter of play. He opened up fourth quarter scoring action at 11:15 off an assist by classmate Tate Rolland to put the game at 7-7.
Mary Washington answered back at 9:44 off a goal by senior Chip Pittard but Love tied the game for the last time just two minutes later. UMW senior Luke Dick tacked on two more goals at 3:03 and with just 25 seconds left to give the hosts a two-goal cushion and the 10-8 win.
In the loss, Frostburg falls to 11-4 and 3-3 in the CAC while Mary Washington improves to 11-2 and 4-2. FSU, who received top-20 votes in the USILA coaches poll this week, have surrendered their only loses of the season to schools ranked within the top-20 poll.
Mary Washington came out firing, scoring the game's first three goals. Junior Greg Bourne got the Bobcats on the board with 22 seconds showing on the first quarter clock to head into the second frame down 3-1.
Both teams traded goals back and forth until five minutes remained in the second quarter. Junior Devin Colegrove, sophomore Nick Stailey and Rolland scored three-straight goals for the Bobcats to tie the game up at 5-5 at halftime
Rolland struck again to notch the first score of the second half and to give FSU its first lead of the game but the contest would see three more ties before the final buzzer.
The Bobcats outshot the Eagles 47-30 and also held the ground ball (30-19) and face off advantages, finishing 16-for-22 while UMW went just 6-for-22. Senior Billy Lark was responsible for 15-of-21 face off victories.
Love notched a hat trick while Rolland finished with two goals, one assist and three ground balls. Junior Chris Rios handed out two assists while senior Andy Luhmann passed out one. Senior Zach Douglas scooped up a career-high 12 ground balls.
Senior goalie Tyler Haines posted just three saves while suffering the loss. UMW keeper Zack DelGrosso needed 13 saves for the win.
The Eagles were paced by Pittard and Dick who netted three goals each while senior John Bohlinger dished out three assists.
