Men's Lacrosse Loses Close Contest At Seventh-Ranked Washington

CHESTERTOWN, Md. – The Frostburg State men's lacrosse team trailed by just one goal early in the fourth quarter, but seventh-ranked Washington College scored the game's final four goals to pull away for a 12-7 victory, Saturday.

The Bobcats, who received votes in this week's USILA Top-25 Coaches Poll, lost for just the first time this spring and to settle at 4-1. The late surge for the Shoremen pushed their record to 4-0.

For the fifth time this season, the Bobcats scored the game's first goal and grabbed an early 1-0 lead. Senior Ryan Serio scored the first of his four goals with 5:23 showing the first quarter for the early advantage.

Washington answered with three-consecutive goals for a 3-1 lead early in the second quarter. Frostburg sophomore Tate Rolland scored off a pass from senior Lucas Flaig at 12:34 to temporarily end the WC scoring surge because the hosts collected another 3-0 run to lead 6-2 with 10:10 to play in the first half.

The Bobcats gathered themselves and ended the second quarter with two goals. Sophomore Spenser Love scored with 4:54 left and Serio capped the half with a goal at 2:45 as Frostburg trailed just 6-4 at the break.

FSU pulled within one goal twice in the second half before the nationally-ranked Shoremen pulled away in the fourth. The junior tandem of Greg Bourne and Chris Rios connected at 7:53 in the third to pull the Bobcats to within one at 7-6. Early in the fourth, Serio scored off an assist from junior Spencer Barnett as Frostburg again trailed by just one, 8-7.

Hunter Nowicki scored two-straight goals for WC at 8:25 and again at 5:37 for a 10-7 edge. Washington tacked on two more goals for the 12-7 final.

Serio finished with a team-best four goals and found the net in all four quarters. Rios added two assists and picked up a team-high six ground balls. Senior Tyler Haines stopped 18 shots in the loss.

Nowicki led the Shoremen with four goals and two assists, while Stephen Luck contributed three goals and one assist. Washington led 65-39 in shots and 47-26 in ground balls.

Frostburg returns to action on Wednesday when it travels to Saint Vincent at 3:30 pm.
