Bobcats Hold Off Marymount; Serio Scores 100th Career Goal

FROSTBURG, Md. – Frostburg State led by five goals early in the fourth quarter but had to hang on for a thrilling 11-10 victory over Marymount in CAC men's lacrosse action, Saturday.

Both teams headed into the conference showdown with six overall wins and both teams were looking for their first CAC victory.

FSU (7-2, 1-1) jumped out to a 2-0 lead and never trailed in the contest, but MU (6-2, 0-1) didn't go away and battled the Bobcats until the final horn. The Saints scored the first goal of the second quarter that tied the game at 3-3 before Frostburg closed out the half with three-consecutive goals for a 6-3 lead at intermission.

Senior Ryan Serio scored three first-half goals to power the FSU attack. He scored his 100th career goal late in the first quarter that propelled the hosts to a 3-1 lead.

Marymount scored the first two goals of the second half to draw within 7-5, but Frostburg seemingly took control of the contest with five of the game's next six goals for an 11-6 advantage early in the fourth quarter.

The fourth quarter was a different story entirely as Marymount seized the momentum and made things very interesting late in the game.

Kellen McCarthy and Nico Burns each scored near the midway point in the final quarter to pull the MU deficit to 11-8. Matt Justice then followed with the final two goals for Marymount with 4:12 to play and again with just 3:31 remaining as the Saints pulled to within 11-10.

Marymount finished 4-for-4 on extra-man opportunities and capitalized on four fourth quarter penalties called on the Bobcats. Following Justice's final goal, Marymount attempted three more shots in the closing minutes, but all were wide of the cage. MU had one final chance to send the game into overtime, but FSU junior Zach Burkhardt knocked the ball from the Saint attackman and senior keeper Tyler Haines scooped up the ground ball and ran out the clock to seal the win.

Serio finished with three goals and two assists, while Colegrove had two goals and two assists. Senior Lucas Flaig added two goals, while Haines finished with 13 saves.

Marymount outshot FSU 43-37, including a 12-5 edge in the fourth quarter. Frostburg held a narrow 11-10 advantage in faceoffs won and finished 14-of-15 on clears.

Justice and Burns led Marymount with four goals and one assists apiece.

Frostburg hosts Catholic this Tuesday at 4:00 pm.
