FROSTBURG, Md. – For the second time in three years, the Frostburg State women's soccer team hoisted the Capital Athletic Conference Championship trophy and is headed to the NCAA Tournament.
The Bobcats (13-4-5) scored a pair of second-half goals and kept upset-minded Mary Washington off-balance in a 2-0 victory, Saturday.
The Bobcats outshot UMW, 22-12, and dominated the time of possession in their offensive end. Frostburg used a 14-6 edge in the second half to seal the 2-0 win.
Junior Erin Worthman slipped a low shot past Eagle keeper Charlotte Owens in the 61
st minute and freshman Melanie Bell connected on a header in the 85
th minute to account for the Bobcat goals. Junior Brooke Longo handed out the assist on the first goal, while sophomore Nicole Gernert took the free kick that led to Bell's goal late in the contest.
Despite the 2-0 shutout, Frostburg could easily have added several more goals. The Bobcats were awarded three penalty kicks, two in the second half, but Owens made a pair of diving saves and turned one away with her right foot to keep her Eagles in the game.
The win advances Frostburg to the NCAA Tournament for the eighth time in 14 years. The NCAA will broadcast its Division III Women's Soccer selection show on Monday at 1:00 pm.
