Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Bobcats' NCAA Run Ends on PKs

BALTIMORE, Md. – It was a tale of two halves for the Frostburg State women's soccer team as the Bobcats tied with Geneseo 3-3 after double overtime but the Knights advanced to the next round with a 2-1 advantage in penalty kicks.

The Bobcats struck first after junior Brooke Longo slide in a nifty through ball from the right side of the box and junior Erin Worthman broke away from the defender to knock in her ninth goal of the year for the 1-0 lead early in the first.

Senior Stephanie Fazenbaker collects a high pass over the defense from Longo in front of the net and strikes from the center of the net to give FSU the 2-0 lead after just under eight minutes of action.

Longo decided to take the shot herself with a strike off her left foot from about 25 yards out to push the Frostburg lead to 3-0 at the 13:05 mark.

Geneseo cut into the Bobcat lead at 17:37 Leah Greene collected the ball off the Knights' second corner kick to put the ball just over the hands of FSU's leaping keeper, senior Katie Smith. The Knights pulled to within one at 3-2 after Greene knocked in her second goal off the game after collecting the rebound off Kelsey Rashke's intial shot that Smith stopped with a dive to her left.

After the seemingly endless scoring in the first 21 minutes of action, both defenses took a step up and the score held 3-2 at the intermission. The Knights were awarded a pair of fouls just outside the box but could not convert on the final two scoring chances of the first half. Junior Samantha Sherman was able to get the ball over the wall of Bobcats but Smith grabbed the shot out of the air to keep the lead in favor of FSU. Geneseo held a slim 6-4 shot lead at halftime while Smith posted four saves to her Knight counterpart's, Allison Stamp, one.

The Knights had the first scoring chance of the second half, but Smith plucked a corner kick out of the air to squash attempt from Geneseo 4:28 into play. Smith posted her first save of the period just over six minutes in as sophomore Nicole Gernert sent in a hard shot from about 30 yards out the Smith was able to save.
Smith made what appeared to be the biggest save of the game, and possibly the season as Greene was coming hard to the net with no defender in front of her and Smith laid out to wrap up the ball after Greene got one final touch on it with just under seven minutes to play. The Frostburg defense followed Smith's impressive save with theatrics of their own to stop the next Knights offensive attack, however the Knights evened the score as sophomore Emily Green sent an unassisted goal to the back right corner of the net with under five to play.

The score would hold and the Bobcats and Knights took the opening round game into overtime.

Smith made a pair of brilliant saves in first extra period to keep the Bobcat season alive and for the sixth time this season Frostburg went into a second overtime period.

Gernert put one of the best balls on net for Frostburg just over six minutes into the second overtime on a free kick from about 35 yards out from the net, but Stamp punched the ball out of the air to keep the game knotted at three.

For the sixth time this season, the Bobcats played 110 minutes of action with a victor being determined, and for the second time in three games had to go to penalty kicks.

Smith finished the 110 minutes of action with 11 saves while Stamp posted five and the Knights held a 16-9 advantage in shots.

Geneseo held a 2-1 advantage in penalty kicks to advance to the next round of the 2014 NCAA Women's Soccer Regional against host Johns Hopkins.

Frostburg wraps up its season with a record of 13-4-6 after advancing to the NCAA tournament for the third time in the last five years.
