NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The road to the 2014 CAC Tournament Championship will now run through the hills of Western Maryland following a 4-3 shootout victory for Frostburg State over top-seeded Christopher Newport, Wednesday in the tournament semifinals. The two squads played to a 1-1 draw following 110 minutes of action.
The victory places the fourth-seeded Bobcats in the league title game for the second time in three years. Frostburg defeated Salisbury in 2012 on penalty kicks, 4-3. This time around, FSU (12-4-5) will host sixth-seeded Mary Washington (12-6-2) at Bobcat Stadium at 2:00 pm.
Frostburg keeper Katie Smith played a major role in the outcome on Wednesday with a career-high 13 saves against the Captains. She saved CNU's final attempt in penalty kicks as the Bobcat players stormed the goal in celebration.
Junior Brooke Longo opened PK's with a shot that hit the back of the net on the right side that set the tone for FSU. Freshman Kourtney McClain, sophomore Nicole Gernert and junior Chelsie McCoy also made their attempts before Smith's save sealed the game.
After a scoreless first half that saw the momentum sit almost entirely in the favor of the Captains (12-3-4), Frostburg came out firing in the second stanza. FSU attempted three shots inside the first 10 minutes of action after getting off just two shots in the first half.
On the third shot, junior Erin Worthman sent a low shot past CNU keeper Haley Casanova for a 1-0 lead in favor of the Bobcats. Reigning CAC Player of the Week Stephanie Fazenbaker handed out the assist, her sixth of the season.
Christopher Newport didn't back down and picked up its pace on the offensive end. The hosts attempted four shots before breaking through with a goal on the fifth attempt. Joy Piirto lofted a shot from 20 yards out that knotted the game at 1-1 in the 77
th minute.
Each team had several chances in the closing minutes of regulation and both overtime periods, but the game was settled on penalty kicks.
Notes: Wednesday's game marks the second time this season that Frostburg and Christopher Newport were unsuccessful in settling the score through regulation and two overtimes. The two settled for a 1-1 draw during the regular season as well ... The Bobcats defeated Mary Washington, 3-0, at Bobcat Stadium during the regular season.
