FROSTBURG, Md. – Despite outscoring La Roche in the second half, the Frostburg State women's basketball team could not overcome the Redhawks as the Bobcats fell to La Roche 71-58, Monday evening.
Trailing by 19 at the half, the Bobcats (1-3) began to chip away at the La Roche (1-1) lead. Senior Ronje' James sparked an 11-0 run over the span of four minutes with a layup at 17:24 that pulled FSU to within 11, 45-34. Junior Courtney Young capped the run with a jumper off a pass from senior Jasmine Walker at 13:29 but the Redhawks answered with seven unanswered points to push their lead to 52-34.
Trailing by 16 with 8:03 to play, Frostburg used a 4-0 sprint to keep the Redhawks close but were unable to cut their lead to single digits as once again LC pulled away to regain an 18-point advantage with 3:22 to play at 67-49. Freshman Tajaia Tillman hit a pair of free throws with just over a minute left to cut the lead to 67-55, but La Roche closed out the game with a narrow 4-3 run to bring the score to its final, 71-58.
Over the first ten minutes of action in the game, the score remained close as each team had an answer for the other's basket until La Roche posted five unanswered points to take its first double-digit lead of the game at 23-13. With just over three minutes to play, Walker hit the back of a trip to the free throw line to pull the Bobcats within nine, 27-18, but La Roche closed out the opening half on a 13-3 run to take a 40-21 lead into the locker room.
James led FSU with 16 points while three Bobcats, James, Tillman and Walker, pulled down eight rebounds. Sophomore Mackenzie O'Donnell led La Roche with a game-high 17 points and classmate Danasha Harris posted a game-best 12 rebounds.
Frostburg State returns to action after the Thanksgiving break as the Bobcats open Capital Athletic Conference action at Mary Washington on Dec. 6 at 6:00 pm.
