BETHANY, W.Va. – Junior Shawn Henson and Nick Smoot combined for 41 points as Frostburg State dropped its season opener to Bethany (W.Va.), 76-70 in overtime, Saturday night.
The Bison (1-0) led by as many as 10 points early in the second half, but Frostburg (0-1) surged back into the contest with a quick 8-0 midway through the second that tied it at 56-56 at 8:05. Henson knocked down a three-pointer on the ensuing Bobcat possession and the visitor lead swelled to 63-58 on another Henson bucket at 4:32.
Bethany didn't go quietly and Darrian Bruster hit layup with 34 seconds left to knot the game at 67-67 and send it to overtime.
Despite the second half surge from the Bobcats, Bethany appeared to hold all the momentum in overtime as it outscored FSU, 9-3, and never trailed.
Smoot finished 9-of-15 shooting (60%), while Henson shot 8-of-15 (53%) and grabbed a team-high nine rebounds. Junior Jerel Carter added seven points and seven boards. As a team, FSU shot 46.7 percent from the field in the second half to help it rally from a 39-32 halftime deficit.
Delonte' Joyce led the Bison with 28 points and 13 rebounds, while Jeff Joynes contributed 15 points.
Frostburg opens its home slate on Tuesday when it hosts Catholic at 7:00 pm.
