FROSTBURG, Md. – The 2014 CAC Tournament first round meeting between Frostburg State and York (Pa.) was quickly heading for extra time as the second half clock ticked under a minute.
Junior Chelsea McCoy and senior Stephanie Fazenbaker had other ideas for the Bobcats as the duo connected on a goal with just 50 seconds left in regulation for a thrilling 1-0 victory over the Spartans, Saturday at a chilly Bobcat Stadium.
The win carries FSU (12-4-4) into the semifinals of the tournament where it will face top-seeded Christopher Newport (12-3-3) on Wednesday. Game time is set for 6:00 pm.
Fazenbaker started the offensive series that led to the late Bobcat game winner. Fazenbaker attempted a shot from a narrow angle at the far post that was cleared off the backline by a Spartan defender. She corralled the loose ball following the shot and slid a soft pass across the goal line to a charging McCoy who buried the ball into the back of the net.
The game-winning goal avenges a regular season loss to the Spartans at Bobcat Stadium and hands Frostburg its third win in its last four matches.
Both keepers finished with seven saves, but FSU's Katie Smith posted the win following five saves in the second half that kept York (Pa.) from grabbing the lead until McCoy came to the rescue.
Spartan keeper Melanie Glessner posted five first-half saves as FSU tried to grab the early lead. York's best chance of the afternoon came early in the second half when a floating shot from Kayla Kovalsky hit the crossbar and bounced back into the field of play.
FSU held a narrow 15-12 edge in shots, while YCP managed all four corner kicks.
