FROSTBURG, Md. – Freshman Brett Basham scored with less than four minutes to go in regulation to help carry the Frostburg State men's soccer team to a 1-0 Capital Athletic Conference win over Mary Washington, Tuesday.
While Basham's goal gave the Bobcats (7-3-2, 2-1 CAC) the score they needed to win the contest, the outcome might have been different had in not been for the help of sophomore keeper Hassan Mostafa.
Mostafa finished with seven saves and garnered his sixth shutout of the season. He made a pair of diving saves in each half to keep UMW (4-6-2, 1-2-0) off the scoreboard. Mostafa registered his first save just 3:32 into the game and finished with four saves in the first half. In the second, he added diving saves in 57
th and 81
st minutes before stopping a header with less than three minutes remaining to help seal the win.
At 86:28, sophomore forward Nabayee Tesfu sent a long pass into the 18-yard box to Basham who slammed home a shot past Eagle keeper Tyler Black for the game's only score. It was the first collegiate goal for Basham and the first assist of the season for Tesfu.
The win is the fourth 1-0 victory for Frostburg this season.
The Bobcats return to the field on Saturday when they host Christopher Newport at 2:00 pm.
