Bobcats Battle Captains to 0-0 Tie

FROSTBURG, Md .- The Frostburg State men's soccer team battled the ninth-ranked Christopher Newport to a tightly contested 0-0 tie at Bobcat Stadium, Saturday afternoon.

Box Score

Sophomore Hassan Mostafa made 12 saves in his ninth shutout of the season for Frostburg State (7-3-3, 2-1-1 CAC) with nine of those saves coming in the first half. Mostafa was met with an onslaught of shots in the opening 25 minutes of the game, turning away five to keep the Captains (11-1-3, 2-0-2 CAC) off the scoreboard. Mostafa made what might have been his biggest save of the game at 26:49 when the Bobcats were called for a foul inside the box. Senior Jalon Brown took the penalty kick for the Captains and after a quick stutter step, shot to his left and Mostafa dove to his right for his sixth save of the contest.

The Bobcats had their first real scoring chance of the game in the 39th minute when senior Joe Clark took a hard shot at the Captains goal but was turned away by CNU defender. A pair of saves from Mostafa just 41 seconds apart from each other in the final minutes of the first half kept the score tied at 0-0 after the first 45 minutes of action.

The two defenses continued their stellar play as the shots were held to 7-3 in favor of CNU in the second half, as compared to 13-2 in the first stanza. FSU's sophomore Nabayee Tesfu took a shot that went just wide of the net with 38 seconds left in regulation and the game headed into overtime.

Mostafa needed just one save in the first overtime period as CNU was able to only get off two shots, one on target, and the score remained tied after 100 minutes of action.

Tesfu opened the final overtime period with a clean shot to the CNU keeper's left but Sam Lesko stopped FSU's only shot on target. Junior Ryan Balfour took the last shot of the contest at 109:01 but Mostafa made his final save of the game to keep the Captains off the board.

CNU outshot the Bobcats 25-6 for the contest while Mostafa made 12 saves for his ninth shutout. Lesko stopped just one shot for the Captains.

Frostburg returns to action when the Bobcats host York (Pa.) in CAC action on Wednesday, Oct. 15 at 5:00 pm.
