BUENA VISTA, Va. – Senior Stephanie Fazenbaker scored two goals to lift the Frostburg State University women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Southern Virginia, Tuesday evening.
The Bobcats end their regular season on a high note with the victory that pushes their overall record to 11-4-4 and 5-2-2 in the league.
Each team scored in the first half, but it was Fazenbaker's second goal that came with less than four minutes to go in regulation that carried FSU to victory.
The Bobcats outshot SVU 29-7, including a 16-2 advantage in the second stanza and Frostburg led 9-1 in corner kicks. However, it was Fazenbaker's two goals that made the difference.
Junior Erin Worthman found Fazenbaker at 27:41 in the first half for a 1-0 Bobcat lead. Just 1:02 later, Southern Virginia (6-10-3, 2-6-1) tied the ballgame at 1-1 when Valerie Cruz scored on a free kick.
Senior Katie Smith earned the win in net after posting five saves in 90 minutes of action. Knight keeper Makenzie Cox endured the loss after playing 87:21 in net and finishing with 12 saves.
With the win, Frostburg State moves to third place in the league standings and awaits Wednesday's games that will determine seedings in the upcoming CAC Tournament. A full preview and more information about the Bobcat soccer opponents will be available later this week.
