FROSTBURG, Md. – Freshman Hedrick de Wit honored his graduating seniors with his third goal of the season to help the Frostburg State men's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over Capital Athletic Conference opponent Marymount, Saturday evening.
Frostburg (9-5-3, 4-3-1 CAC) took a 1-0 lead late in the first half and never looked back to give its graduating seniors a victory for their last regular season game at Bobcat Stadium. De Wit took a quick pass from freshman Hunter Strine 33:36 into action and sent it flying by the Marymount (3-14, 1-7 CAC) goalie for the 1-0 lead.
The Bobcats had a pair of scoring chances at the end of the first half as sophomore Chris Herbert's shot went just high off the crossbar and freshman Andrew Jenkins sent a ball high over the goal as FSU had to settle for the 1-0 lead at the intermission.
Frostburg outshot the Saints 13-2 in the first half with sophomore goalie Hassan needing just two saves to keep the slim one goal lead.
The Bobcat offense kept the pressure on the defense in the second half as they sent a flurry of shots to MU keeper, Logan Cropper, and outshot Marymount 12-4 in the final period. Junior Mitchell Muise put the finishing touches on the 2-0 score with his third goal of the year with just 10:26 showing on the clock. Freshman Brett Basham put pressure on goal as his first shot off a corner kick went just wide before he followed with a header to Muise who pushed the ball past Cropper to give FSU the 2-0 lead.
The Frostburg defense continued to be as stingy as it has all year and did not allow the Saints to get off another shot in the final 10 minutes of action to walk away with the 2-0 victory.
Hassan needed just five saves in net for Frostburg while Cropper made seven stops in the loss for MU.
Frostburg wraps up the regular season as the Bobcats travel to Southern Virginia for a CAC tilt on Wednesday October 29 at 6:00 pm. The Bobcats currently sit fifth in the CAC going into the final week of conference action.
