FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State men's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to Capital Athletic Conference foe, Salisbury, Sunday afternoon after a late second half goal by the Sea Gulls.
Frostburg (8-4-3, 3-2-1 CAC) and the Sea Gulls were locked in a near perfect defensive battle through the first 83 minutes of action until Salisbury's Cy McNeill broke the scoreless tie at 83:03. After taking control of a pass from Justin Lee on a loose ball in front the Bobcat net, McNeill slid it past sophomore Hassan Mostafa to his left to give Salisbury a 1-0 advantage and eventually the victory.
The first half featured a tight defensive battle between the two teams as Frostburg held a slight 4-2 advantage in shots. Frostburg had it first scoring chance of the first after as SU goalie Drew Staedeli turned away senior Brandon Lutz's header off a free kick after a Salisbury foul. Salisbury had its only scoring chance in the first half 11:51 into action as Stephen Poorman tried to get a ball past Mostafa on a header by the sophomore keeper kept the ball out of the net to keep the game scoreless.
The Bobcats and Sea Gulls traded shots on target just a minute apart at 55:55 and 56:45 but neither team could find the net until McNeill's goal gave SU the 1-0 win.
The Bobcats held the advantage in shots (8-7) and corner kicks (3-2) while Staedeli needed three saves for the win and Mostafa posted a pair of saves for Frostburg.
Lutz led Frostburg with two shots on the afternoon.
Frostburg returns to action when the Bobcats travel to Penn State Harrisburg on Wednesday for a 5:00 pm contest.
