Women’s Basketball Suffers Tough Loss At St. Mary’s

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – In an up-and-down, back-and-forth affair, the Frostburg State women's basketball team suffered a tough 75-65 loss at St. Mary's (Md.) in CAC action, Wednesday.

The game featured 10 ties and seven lead changes, but it was the Seahawks (4-7, 2-3) that rallied from a halftime deficit and held off a few late threats from FSU for the win.

Frostburg rallied from a nine-point deficit midway through the first half to lead 39-37 at halftime. Down 21-12 at 10:57, the Bobcats (2-8, 1-4) used a 13-5 scoring spurt that covered just over four minutes to tie the game at 25 apiece. Freshman Kayla Love hit a three-pointer with four minutes remaining in the first half and Frostburg carried that momentum into intermission.

However in the second stanza, St. Mary's outscored visiting FSU 38-26. SMCM tried to run away with the contest in the second, leading by as many as 11 points, 63-52, with 8:21 to go. Frostburg brought the deficit to four points on three occasions and trailed just 69-65 with 2:08 to play. The Seahawks answered by scoring the game's final six points for the 10-point win.

Senior guard Elaina Hummel came off the bench to lead the Bobcats in scoring. She finished with 15 points and moved into 15th place on FSU's all-time scoring list. Love and junior Simone Wise finished with 10 and 11 points, respectively, to lead the starting lineup.

Both teams finished with three players in double figures, but the hosts had two starters with double-doubles. Sophie Pruden scored 21 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, while Marche Pearson had 18 points to go along with 10 rebounds. Shana Lewis registered 20 points and added nine boards. St. Mary's held a 57-39 edge in rebounding.

Frostburg returns to action this Saturday when it hosts Marymount at 1:00 pm.
