FSU Women Fall 82-44 At Christopher Newport

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Junior Simone Wise scored 14 points to lead Frostburg State, but Christopher Newport proved too strong in an 82-44 victory, Saturday afternoon.

The Bobcats slip to 2-7 overall and 1-3 in the CAC following their first game in 2014. Wise made a team-best five baskets, grabbed eight rebounds and led Frostburg in scoring for the fourth time this season. Senior guard Elaina Hummel came off the bench to chip in 10 points, while junior Jasmine Walker posted a game-high 11 rebounds.

Hummel found Wise for a jumper with 6:17 showing on the first half clock as the Bobcats hung with the Captains (9-2, 2-1) for much of the first half. It was Wise's third basket of the first period and pulled FSU to within four, 21-17.

CNU then scored the game's next 13 points and the hosts closed out the first half on a 19-6 run for 40-17 lead at intermission.

Christopher Newport, riding a four-game winning streak, pushed its lead to 20 points early in the second and never looked back. The Captains slowly built their lead to a game-high 45 points (80-35) with just under four minutes to play in regulation before winning by 38.

Nicole Mitchell scored 16 points to lead CNU, while Tia Perry contributed 14. The hosts shot 40.8 percent from the field and held Frostburg to just 12 baskets and a 21.8 shooting percentage. The Captains also turned 35 Bobcat turnovers into 36 points.

Frostburg returns to action on Wednesday with a road contest at St. Mary's at 6:00 pm.
