UMW Runs Away From FSU

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Junior Simone Wise totaled 24 points to lead three Frostburg State players in double-figures, but Mary Washington earned an 89-60 CAC victory, Wednesday.

The Bobcats (3-12, 1-8 CAC) hung tough over the first seven minutes of action; leading by two in the early going and trailing by just four, 14-10, following a pair of senior Elaina Hummel free throws.

Mary Washington (12-6, 5-5) answered with an 11-0 run for a 25-14 lead with 10:33 showing. Bobcat junior Ronje' James hit back-to-back jumpers to pull Frostburg within 28-18, but UMW surged to a 20-point cushion, 40-20, with 4:29 to play. The hosts led 49-33 at the break.

Hummel hit a three pointer early in the second half to pull the Bobcats within 15, 51-36, however, the Eagles slowly increased their lead to a game-high 29, 89-60, at the final horn.

Wise's 24 points marked her fourth game with 20 or more this season and fifth time leading the Bobcats in scoring. James shot 61.5 percent (8-of-13) from the floor for 18 points, while Hummel contributed 13.

Brianne Comden led all players with 27 points for the Eagles, while Sam Partonen and Brieneke Matthes added 14 each.

Frostburg returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 1 as they travel to CAC opponent Wesley for a 1:00 pm contest.
