Bobcats Fall Short at Salisbury

SALISBURY, Md. – Despite a practically even first half, the Frostburg State women's basketball team couldn't keep up in the second half as it suffered an 84-71 defeat to CAC opponent Salisbury, Saturday afternoon.

Box Score

The first half featured nine ties and eight lead changes and Salisbury (8-6, 5-2 CAC) used a strong inside presence to cling to a slim two-point halftime cushion. Junior Becca Himes gathered an offensive rebound and connected on the last second put-back to send the teams into the locker room with the hosts leading 42-40.

While Salisbury used an inside game approach, Frostburg (3-10, 1-6 CAC) capitalized on its outside shooting with five three-pointers. Senior Elaina Hummel and junior Ronje' James each connected on a pair of three's and finished the first half with 13 and 12 points, respectively.
Salisbury matched its first half scoring with 42 points in the second, including a 16-6 edge in points in the paint. FSU scored 31 points but made just two three-pointers after shooting nearly 50.0 percent from deep in the first half.

The game was tied for the 13th time just 3:25 into the second half but the Sea Gulls slowly pulled away from that point on. SU led by 10 with just under 13 minutes to play and held a game-high 23 point edge, 79-56 with 3:40 showing.

Frostburg closed out the remaining minutes with a 15-5 run to bring its final deficit to 13, 84-71.

The duo of Hummel and James paced FSU with 23 points each, the only two Bobcats reaching double-figures. Hummel shot 60.0 percent (6-for-10) from the floor, was a perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line and was 3-for-6 from long range. James rounded out her game with the addition of five rebounds, four steals and two assists. Sophomore Deara Parker led the roster in rebounds with seven and assists with four.

SU junior Anna Hackett led with a game-high 25 points, 16 points coming from the first frame. Hackett collected six rebounds, six assists and three steals while classmate Sarah Seipp finished with 13 points. Himes pulled down eight rebounds in addition to her seven points, five assists and three blocks.
