Bethany Knocks Off Men’s and Women’s Swimming

BETHANY, W.Va. – The Frostburg State men's and women's swimming teams came up short against the Bethany Bison late Wednesday evening. The men lost 146-105, while the women fell 140-114.

Results

In a back-and-forth fight the men had a total of 18 top-three finishes, of those 18 the Bobcats took five wins from the Bison.
The duo of senior Jesse Gregory and sophomore Jonathan Shepard swept the pool as they secured four- of-five wins for the day. Gregory took lead in the 200-yard free as he finished in 1:56.42, putting nine points on the board for Frostburg. Then, in an intense performance in the 100-yard free, he finished first at 52.23, just hundredths of a second ahead of Bethany swimmers.

Shepard grabbed a pair of individual events in the 100-yard breast and the 200-yard breast. He won the 100-yard breast in 1:04.82, and took down the 200-yard breast with a 22 second lead over the field (2:19.94).
Up and coming freshman Aleksandar Combs grabbed the final victory, taking the 200-yard butterfly in 2:17.83, marking his third top-three finish in the past week.

Out of 12 events on the women's side, sophomore Maci Quintanilla and juniors Meredith Johnson and Kaitlyn Donch overtook three individual events for first-place finishes.

In the 200-yard backstroke, Quintanilla touched the wall at 2:15.37, with Johnson right behind her to add a second-place finish for the Bobcats (2:36.37). Johnson later moved up to take first in the 100-yard backstroke with a finishing time of 1:11.02, and also took another second-place finish in the 50-yard free, finishing her final lap with 27.48 seconds on the clock.

Donch dominated the 200-yard breast not leaving the Bison a chance, with a 21-second lead she finished in 2:43.85.
Juniors Sarah King and Jackie Franzak teamed with freshman Sydney Fazenbaker and Megan Dix in the 200-yard medley relay for a second-place finish over Bethany, with Dix swimming anchor she ended the relay at 2:15.77.

The Bobcats will return to the water on January 18th at 6:00 pm against Guilford.
