FROSTBURG, Md. – A week after a thrilling home victory over Mary Washington that clinched a home playoff game, the Frostburg State men’s lacrosse team was eliminated in the CAC Tournament First Round with an 11-6 setback to UMW, Wednesday.
A week ago, the Bobcats (11-6) surged out to an early lead and held off the Eagles (9-6) for a 13-11 victory that gave FSU the tournament’s fourth seed and a first round contest at Bobcat Stadium.
Fast forward a week and it was Mary Washington’s turn to jump out to an early lead. The Eagles raced out to a 4-1 lead early in the second quarter and later blew open a one-goal game with four scores in the fourth quarter.
Trailing 7-3 early in the third quarter, Frostburg collected itself and used a 3-0 spurt and trailed just 7-6 entering the fourth. Sophomore Devin Colegrove and freshman Spenser Love each had a goal and an assist during the run that pulled the Bobcats to within one.
However, the Eagles proved too strong with four goals in the fourth quarter on just seven shots.
Mary Washington set the tone in the first half taking a 6-3 lead into intermission, while holding a 35-9 lead in shots. UMW finished with a 51-37 edge in shots for four quarters of action.
Bobcat junior keeper Tyler Haines did his part to keep the hosts in the game, stopping 20 shots, including nine in the second quarter. Classmate Billy Lark won 15-of-17 faceoffs and added five ground balls. Colegrove finished with a team best two goals and one assist.
Billy Kelly finished with four goals and one assists for the Eagles, who advance to face top seed Salisbury this Saturday in the tournament semifinals. UMW keeper Kyle Davitt finished with 16 saves.
