Fast Start Propels FSU To Victory

FROSTBURG, Md. – Frostburg State opened up a big lead after the first quarter of play and used two late goals to lock up a 13-11 victory over Mary Washington in CAC men’s lacrosse, Wednesday night.

Box Score

The Bobcats (10-5, 2-3 CAC), who have struggled at times to score in the opening quarter this season, broke out in a big way.

After a 1-1 tie early in the first, FSU seemingly scored at will as it used a 5-0 run to grab a 6-1 lead after the first quarter. Freshman Spenser Love, who scored the game’s first goal at 14:23, opened the second stanza with a goal at 9:02 as the hosts grabbed their largest lead of the game, 7-1.

The Eagles (7-6, 1-4), however, gathered themselves and closed out the first half with four-straight goals to narrow the gap to 7-5. UMW scored the first tally of the third quarter to draw within one at 7-6. Mary Washington later collected a 3-0 run in the fourth quarter that tied the contest at 11-11.

However, FSU sophomore Greg Bourne took advantage of a costly UMW turnover near midfield. He scooped up a misplayed ball, raced towards the net and fired a low shot into the cage as Frostburg led by one, 12-11.

The Eagles’ Paul Tunick had a solid look inside the final minute, but his shot hit the post and eventually ended up in the stick of FSU’s Love, who scored a breakaway goal to seal the win.

Junior Ryan Serio connected on a game-high four goals to lead Frostburg. He scored three-straight to close out the first quarter that gave FSU the 6-1 lead. Sophomore Devin Colegrove finished with two goals and two assists, including a goal and two assists during FSU’s crucial first quarter outburst.

Bourne finished with one goal and three assists, while Love scored three times. Junior Billy Lark won 18-of-28 faceoffs (64.2%), while classmate Tyler Haines made 11 saves in net.

Sean Dacey scored three goals to lead Mary Washington, while Luke Dick scored once and handed out two assists. Zack Del Grosso made nine saves in the loss.

The win also pushed FSU one step closer to hosting a first round CAC Tournament game. If the Bobcats can defeat Wesley in their CAC regular-season finale on Saturday afternoon, they will host a first round game on Wednesday, April 24. FSU and Wesley will play this Saturday at noon at Bobcat Stadium.
