Men’s Lacrosse Nipped By St. Mary’s

ST. MARY’S CITY, Md. – Sophomore Chris Rios and freshman Spenser Love each registered two goals and one assist, but a Frostburg State rally came up just short in a 10-9 loss to St. Mary’s in Capital Athletic Conference action, Saturday.

The Bobcats (6-4, 0-2 CAC) scored two goals late in the fourth quarter that cut a 10-7 deficit to 10-9 inside the final minute. Time simply ran out on the visitor’s comeback attempt.

FSU rebounded from a 4-1 deficit early in the second quarter with five-straight goals for a 6-4 lead with 10:32 showing in the third quarter. The two squads traded goals before the Seahawks (6-4, 2-0 CAC) posted a five-goal run of their own for a 10-7 lead with 7:47 showing in the final quarter.

Despite losing by just one goal, Frostburg was outshot 49-22. Junior keeper Tyler Haines stopped 16 shots, including eight in the first quarter as the Bobcats trailed just 2-1 after the opening frame.

The Seahawks’ 49 shots are their second highest of the season and they fired at least 10 in each quarter. SMCM tried to run away with the game in the first quarter, holding a 17-2 lead in shots after one.

Following Rios and Love, juniors Ryan Serio and Lucas Flaig each added two goals, while Luhmann finished with a goal and an assist. It was the first action of the year for Flaig and both his goals came during the Bobcat 5-0 run that handed them a 6-4 lead.

Will Lerch (three goals, one assist) and Ben Love (three goals) powered the St. Mary’s attack. Both found the net twice in the second half, while Lerch’s third and final goal handed the hosts a 10-7 lead with 7:47 to play in the fourth.

FSU returns to action this Wednesday with a non-conference game against St. Vincent at 7:00 pm.
