Softball Splits a Pair of 4-3 Decisions On Opening Day

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Frostburg State softball team split a pair of 4-3 decisions on Friday in Virginia Beach at the Beach Blast to open the 2013 campaign with a 1-1 record. The Bobcats lost to Rutgers-Camden, 4-3, in the first contest of the day and finished with a 4-3 defeat of Mount Saint Vincent in the nightcap.

FSU (1-1) opened up a 2-0 lead after plating single runs in the top of the first and third innings. Senior Shari Beavers singled home a run in the first and freshman Renay Aubel smacked a solo home run in the third as the Bobcats grabbed a 2-0 edge.

Rutgers tied the ballgame in the bottom of the third with a pair of runs and later tacked on a solo run in the bottom of the fifth for a 3-2 lead.

The teams exchanged single runs in the seventh. Beavers again singled home a run that tied the contest at 3-3, however, the Scarlet Raptors scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the frame on a fielder’s choice.

In the second game, the Bobcats returned the favor scoring two runs in the bottom of the seventh to rally for a 4-3 victory.

Mount Saint Vincent scored two in the first and one in the top of the seventh for a 3-2 cushion. Frostburg answered when sophomore Bailey Ellsworth scored on an error and freshman Taylor Blevins scored on a wild pitch to give the Bobcats the win.

Beavers earned the win in the circle, tossing all seven innings while fanning five and allowing just two earned runs.

At the plate, Beavers finished with four hits and a pair of RBIs, while Aubel scored twice and had a home run.

The Bobcats return to action tomorrow when they face Shenandoah at 10:00 am and Wilkes at noon.
