Adam Abbate found the net just 18 seconds into the fourth quarter as host Christopher Newport (4-4) opened up a 6-3 lead. It was the third-straight goal for the Captains that broke a 3-3 tie from early in the second quarter.
However, it was all Frostburg State after that as the Bobcats (5-2) netted the game’s final four goals to grab the victory. Sophomore Devin Colegrove started the rally with an unassisted man-up goal at 12:58.
Just over a minute later, junior Ryan Serio scored off a feed from sophomore Chris Rios as FSU started to swing the momentum in its favor. Serio’s goal, his only of the contest, brought Frostburg within one at 6-5.
It was Rios’ turn to get in on the scoring action starting with just over six minutes to play. He tied the contest at 6-6 at 6:07 and with 4:00 left in regulation, Rios fired a goal past the keeper for what would prove to be the game winner. Colegrove was credited with the assist as the Bobcats clung to a 7-6 lead.
Following a pair of penalties from Frostburg with 3:26 left, CNU took four shots over the next 1:18, but couldn’t connect and junior keeper Tyler Haines saved the final shot to help seal the win.
The Bobcats held a 30-22 advantage in shots and won 13-of-17 face-offs, including all four during the rally. FSU was also a perfect 13-of-13 on clear attempts.
Rios, who had just one assist entering the final stanza, finished with two goals, two assists, five ground balls and three turnovers. Freshman Spenser Love scored the game’s first two goals to give the visitors a 2-0 cushion in the opening quarter. Colegrove provided one goal and one assist. He was the third Bobcat with two or more points on the day.
Haines stopped 10 shots, his fourth game with double-digit saves. Junior Billy Lark was responsible for all 13 face-offs for a 76.4 win percentage on the afternoon.
Christopher Newport had a more balanced scoring attack as six different players scored a goal. Andy McGregor posted nine saves in the loss, but managed just one save in the final quarter.
The Bobcats continue their non-conference slate on Wednesday when they travel to Washington & Jefferson at 3:00pm. FSU then hosts seventh-ranked Salisbury for their CAC opener next Saturday at 1:00 pm.
