Men’s Lacrosse Rallies Three Times For Season-Opening Win

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Trailing 6-5 early in the third quarter, Frostburg State found the net five-consecutive times to secure a 10-8 victory over Catholic, Saturday, in FSU’s men’s lacrosse season opener.

CUA (1-3) opened third quarter action with a goal from Chris Wellock at 12:02 that broke a 5-5 halftime lead and put the hosts up 6-5. From there, the Bobcats rallied with five-straight goals over the rest of the third quarter and nearly half of the fourth to take control.

Freshman Spenser Love gave the Bobcats (1-0) a 7-6 edge at 7:59 with his third goal of the contest, a lead they would not relinquish. Love scored his fourth and final goal with just 17 seconds gone from the fourth quarter clock that handed Frostburg a 9-6 lead.

Junior Ricky Kneebone capped the 5-0 run with his only goal of the game that increased the lead to 10-6 with 5:59 to play. Sophomore Devin Colegrove handed out three assists during the scoring outburst that locked up the victory for FSU.

Catholic added a pair of goals late in the fourth to draw within 10-8 at the final buzzer.

Love led both squads with four goals. His first tally opened second quarter action and brought the Bobcats to within 3-2 at 10:39. Sophomore Chris Rios finished with two goals and three assists. He found the net for the first time with 6:42 to play in the second that tied the contest at 3-3.

Colegrove finished with one goal and four assists. His only goal opened the scoring for the Bobcats with 4:15 left in the first quarter that ended a 3-0 run that the Cardinals used to open the game.

Following Catholics early 3-0 run, FSU rallied behind a 4-0 scoring spurt that grabbed a 4-3 lead with 5:40 left in the second. Love’s second score gave the visitors a 4-3 edge at 5:40. Following a pair of Catholic scores, junior Zach Douglas found the net with 38 seconds left in the second quarter that tied the game at 5-5 at intermission.

In net, junior Tyler Haines stopped 16 shots, nine in the second half and six in the fourth quarter to help the Bobcats preserve the win. Junior Billy Lark won 11-of-18 faceoffs (61.1%) as FSU won 7-of-9 second half faceoffs that helped key the 5-0 run. The Bobcats finished 15-of-19 in clear attempts and 3-of-6 on extra man opportunities.

Sean Cummins scored three goals to pace the Cardinals offensively. Brendan Englert and Nathan Chan each chipped in two goals and two assists. Harrison Holak endured the loss in the cage, allowing all 10 Bobcat goals while stopping nine shots.

Frostburg returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts La Roche at 7:00 pm for its home opener.
