Frostburg Falls In OT to Mary Washington In CAC First Round

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Despite three starters in double figures and a double-digit lead in the second half, Frostburg State suffered a slim 79-78 loss in overtime to Mary Washington in the first round of the CAC Tournament, Tuesday night.

The Bobcats led by as many as 12 points in the second half, but Mary Washington never gave up and rallied to take a three-point lead (71-68) with just under three minutes left in regulation.

With 36 seconds left, Bobcat senior DeSean Antoine hit his third three-pointer of the second half to knot the contest at 71-71 and send it to overtime.

UMW opened the extra frame with a 6-0 run and tried to pull away, but FSU rallied to take a one-point lead, 78-77, with 1:13 left on the clock.

However, UMW leading scorer Dylan Farinet calmly knocked down two free throws with 29 seconds left to give the hosts a 79-78 lead. Antoine attempted a three-pointer from in front of the Bobcat bench with one second left, but the shot was off target and the hosts escaped with the victory.

Antoine scored a team-high 23 points behind a 6-of-9 (66.6%) effort from beyond the arc. Senior Christian Jackson scored 22 points and grabbed seven rebounds. His 22 points handed him the school’s single-season scoring record as he passed the previous mark of 666. Jackson caps his season with 670 points. Freshman Royce Hunsberger rounded out the three starters in double figures when he contributed a career-best 17 points and three 3-pointers.

Farinet totaled a game-high 25 points, while Bradley Reister posted 16 points and 12 rebounds.

Mary Washington held a 56-31 rebound advantage and outscored the Bobcats 44-14 in the paint. The Eagles (14-12) advance to the semifinals where they will face top seeded and seventh ranked St. Mary’s on Thursday night.

Frostburg State ends its season with a 10-16 overall record.
