Bobcats Fall in CAC Opener

FROSTBURG, Md. – The University of Mary Washington pulled away late in the first half to roll past the Frostburg State women's basketball team, 85-53, in the Capital Athletic Conference opener, Wednesday evening.

Box Score

The Bobcats (1-4, 0-1 CAC) surrendered a slim lead early in the game but hung tight with the Eagles (4-1, 1-0 CAC) early in the first half.

Frostburg clutched a four-point lead at 16:39 paced by junior guard Simone Wise who netted six points within the first four minutes of action.

A quick layup by Eagle junior Aubrey Howland and a three ball from classmate Claire Haeuptle paved the way for Mary Washington to grab a slim 13-12 lead.

The Eagles built up a six point lead at 13:51, but senior guard Elaina Hummel brought the game within four with a 2-for-2 trip to the free throw line.
Hummel finished with a perfect 6-for-6 performance from the free throw line.

The Bobcats got as close as two at 9:35 aided by a three-pointer from freshman guard Kayla Love, assisted by Hummel. That was as close as the Bobcats would get as the Eagles produced a double-digit lead going into halftime and kept the game that way until the final buzzer.

Frostburg's turnovers proved to be their undoing, tallying 24 to the Eagle's 10.

Junior guard Ronje' James paced the Bobcats with 14 points, with another perfect night from behind the line (4-for-4).

Hummel finished with 13 points and four assists while Wise donated 10 points.  Junior Jasmine Walker led the Bobcats in the paint grabbing nine rebounds.

Mary Washington was steered by sophomore Sarah Listenbee with 15 points, followed closely behind by Howland with 14. Senior Aby Diop was the only player on the court to reach double-digits in rebounds with 13.

Frostburg returns to action on Saturday as they continue CAC action, hosting Wesley at 1:00 pm.
