Volleyball Splits at FSU Tri-Tournament; Grabs Second CAC Victory

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State volleyball team took home a victory against Capital Athletic Conference opponent Wesley, 3-2, but later fell to John Carroll, 3-1, in Frostburg's own tri-match, Saturday.

The CAC battle between Wesley and Frostburg State went down to the wire but Frostburg State took the final set by two points to grab a 3-2 win.

Frostburg (5-23) grabbed the first two sets right out of the gate by set scores of 25-16 and 25-19. The Bobcats took advantage of errors by the Wolverines in both sets to push them to a 2-0 advantage.

Refusing to go down without a fight, the Wolverines bounced back and clenched back-to-back sets to tie up the match. Wesley finished with the 25-14 edge in the third set and won the fourth set 25-20.

It all came down to the fifth set that saw a tie on nine separate occasions. It was all even at 11-11 when the Wolverines suffered three errors to put Frostburg up 14-11.

Wesley senior middle hitter Lindsay Dimuzio contributed a score to bring the Wolverines within two, but Bobcat freshman Kayla Porter served up an ace for a 14-13 lead. The match was finished when Wesley committed a service error for a 15-13 finish for the hosts.

Sophomore Aimee Petrides paced the Bobcats with a team-high 14 kills and 15 digs and a block. Porter and sophomore Caitlyn Collins each tallied 11 digs while Collins handed out 29 assists, two blocks and a kill.

Later in the evening, Frostburg State matched up with John Carroll who swept Wesley 3-0 in the second match of the day.

The Bobcats grabbed a close 25-22 victory in the first set. Both teams battled as the score read 21-21 late in the frame. Collins rattled off two service aces to give FSU a two-point cushion but the Bobcats suffered an error, maintaining a slim 23-22 lead. The Blue Streaks suffered two-straight errors as the Bobcats grabbed a 1-0 lead in the match.

John Carroll (16-8) bounced back grabbing the next three sets behind scores of 25-12, 25-12 and 25-10 to finalize the match at 3-1.

Petrides led in the second match with a game-high 15 kills and 12 digs. Senior April Wolfe contributed 15 digs defensively and on the offensive side posted five kills and an ace. Collins handed out 22 assists, nine digs, three aces and two kills. Junior Morgan Hoover added 10 digs and six kills while Porter added 11 digs.

FSU returns to the court on Wednesday as they travel to conference opponent York (Pa.) for a match at 7:00 pm.
