FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State women’s basketball team surrendered an early first half lead and couldn’t recover in a 53-42 loss to Capital Athletic Conference opponent Mary Washington, Saturday afternoon.
The Eagles (15-5, 6-1 CAC) held the Bobcats to just one bucket and with the help of three long balls took the advantage early in the game at 14:30, 15-2.
The Bobcats allowed Mary Washington to retain the lead for the length of the contest struggling behind a 29.6 field goal percentage for the afternoon.
FSU (6-13, 1-6 CAC) made a solid push at the end of the half with a jumper from sophomore Ronje’ James at 2:51 to post the score at 21-12. Two free throws by senior forward Brynn Arnone brought the Bobcats within seven with just two minutes left in the first half.
Mary Washington answered right back with three separate buckets to achieve a double-digit lead going into halftime, 27-16.
The second half rang the same tune as the Eagles grew their lead to 14, 34-20 with 15:24 left to play.
The Bobcat defense forced 18 turnovers and scored 14 points off the UMW errors. The scrappy defense dwindled the Eagle’s lead to five, 34-29, with 9:42 due to fast break opportunities and a solid four point performance from Arnone during the run.
Frostburg just couldn’t capitalize on the momentum as the Eagles put together one last scoring run to post the final score at 53-42.
The Bobcats were led by junior Elaina Hummel who finished with a game-high 14, notching her fourth consecutive game in double-digits.
Arnone finished with nine points, an assist, two steals and a block while James paced the Bobcats in rebounding with eight.
The Eagles only had one scorer reach double-digits in Sam Partonen who ended with 10.
FSU returns to action this Wednesday, January 29
th as they travel to face non-conference opponent Southern Virginia at 6:00 pm.
