Men’s Soccer Rallies for OT Win

BETHANY, W.Va. – Trailing by three goals with just over 20 minutes to play in a match would make a comeback sound like an insurmountable feat. However, the Frostburg State men’s team was unfazed and rallied for a 5-4 overtime victory over Bethany, Wednesday.

Box Score

The Bobcats, who start the season 3-0 for the second-consecutive year, trailed 4-1 with just over 18 minutes to play in regulation.

Junior Jared Fohs started the FSU rally with his first goal of the season with just 17:54 left on the clock. Fohs’ goal ended a 4-0 Bethany run and closed the gap to 4-2.

The Frostburg State surge continued less than a minute after Fohs started the rally. Senior co-captain Shawn Baker found junior Bryan Whitmore for his first of the year that placed the score at 4-3

Fohs wasn’t done with his role in the comeback for in the 82nd minute his throw in was headed into the back of the net by junior Michael Norman as FSU completed the comeback and tied it a 4-4.

Frostburg, playing with several missing players at key positions due to injury, outshot Bethany 27-9 and held a decisive 15-5 edge in corner kicks.

The edge in the statistical numbers continued into the extra time as the Bobcats attempted the only two shots of the overtime period.

After Bison keeper Skylar Kinnard stopped the first shot, Frostburg kept the pressure on. On the second corner kick, a scrum ensued in front of the net and FSU senior Godwin Amuzie got enough of the ball to send home the game winning shot.

Junior Pablo Torrano opened the game’s scoring at 5:33 off of Baker’s first assist. Bethany then went on to score four-straight goals for a 4-1 lead. Arkangelo James scored the final two goals, the first at 27:12, and the second just 35 seconds into the second half.
