WARRENTON, Va. – The Frostburg State University field hockey team fell to non-conference opponent, Virginia Wesleyan, 2-1 Saturday afternoon at Highland School on National Field Hockey Day.
The Marlins (1-4) took the lead with an early first half goal from Taylor Lobel at 12:01.
Frostburg (2-4) evened the score just over five minutes later as freshman Kathryn Bickerstaff scored the first goal of her college career. Bickerstaff subbed in at 17:00 and just 16 seconds later took a pass from senior Rachel Merritt right in front of the cage to beat the keeper to her right and tie the game at 1-1.
Amelia Goebel would eventually give the Marlins back the lead off a penalty stroke with 11:54 to go in the first half. Goebel took a foul in front of the net and snuck the ball past senior goalie Maggie Edwards to give Virginia Wesleyan the 2-1 lead.
The Marlins held a 18-14 advantage in shots. Edwards made nine saves in the loss while Marlin keeper Lindsay Baker made eight saves, all in the second half.
Frostburg returns to action when the Bobcats host former conference foe, Stevenson, at Bobcat Stadium on Sept. 18 at 5:00 pm.
