FROSTBURG, Md. - The Goucher Gophers scored four consecutive goals over a three quarter span to break open a tie game and defeat the Frostburg State men's lacrosse team, 6-3, on a warm Wednesday afternoon at Bobcat Stadium.
Box Score
The Gophers and Bobcats traded goals in the first and in the early part of the second quarter, as freshmen Chris Rios and Devin Colegrove accounted for those two Frostburg first half goals. Colegrove's tally at 8:50 of the second knotted the score at two.
That tie would be short-lived, though, as Goucher's Kyle Boncaro netted his second of the contest just 2:26 later. Goucher carried the 3-2 lead into halftime, and Boncaro's goal was the first of the four straight that would lift the Gophers to the non-conference road win.
Rory Averett's two scores sandwiched Matt Lynch's goal to extend the lead to 6-2 at 12:34 of the fourth quarter. Sophomore Ryan Serio brought the deficit to 6-3 with his goal at 8:43, but the Bobcats would come no closer against Goucher goalie Connor Mishaw.
Despite the loss, the Bobcat defense held down a potent attack that had averaged 19.5 goals per game in its first four wins of 2012. Sophomore goalie Tyler Haines made 14 stops.
The Bobcats were outshot, 43-26, and also 20-12 in shots on goal. Colegrove, Serio, senior Dan Dowd and sophomore Devon Stailey led the team with five shots each. Dowd and Stailey each led with three shots on goal. Colegrove led with seven ground balls while senior Zack Hiller had six.
The Bobcats return home Saturday to face non-conference opponent Widener at 11:00 a.m.
