FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State men’s lacrosse team suffered a 14-4 loss to St. Mary’s in the Capital Athletic Conference opener for both schools, Saturday afternoon.

The Seahawks (3-3, 1-0) scored eight-straight goals over parts of the first and third quarters and the entire second quarter to distance themselves from the Bobcats (2-6, 0-1) and break open a close contest.
Taylor Cook scored the game’s first two goals that pushed St. Mary’s to a 2-0 lead inside the first five minutes of play.
Bobcat freshman Devin Colegrove scored an unassisted goal at 8:14 to trim the deficit to one, 2-1, but St. Mary’s rebounded with the next eight goals. The Seahawks closed out the first quarter with the final three goals and added four more in the second stanza for a 9-1 lead at halftime.
SMCM scored two goals to open second-half action before FSU freshman Greg Bourne scored off a feed from sophomore Ryan Serio as the Bobcats ended the scoring drought at 11-2 with 8:44 left in the third.
FSU was unable to gain any ground on the Seahawks as the two teams traded goals over the remainder of the game. Bobcat sophomore Britton Hoover scored with 3:13 remaining in the third and freshman Devon Stailey found the net just 13 seconds into the fourth. Sophomore Andy Luhmann and Serio were credited with assists on the two goals.
St. Mary’s capped the afternoon with the final goal with just 2:19 to play.
Serio finished with two assists and now leads the team with 10 on the season. Sophomore keeper Tyler Haines stopped four shots in just under 20 minutes of action before leaving the contest with an injury. Sophomore Billy Lark finished 11-of-20 (55%) on face-offs.
Patrick Mull scored once but handed out seven assists to pace the Seahawk offense. Will Lerch scored four goals, including three during the 8-0 run. Stu Wheeler stopped 10 shots in net.
Despite the loss, FSU led 32-30 in shots and 32-29 in groundballs. The Bobcats were 11-of-14 on clears won the face-off battle at 11-of-20.
FSU returns to action this Tuesday with a road contest at Greensboro College at 3:30 pm.
