Men's Hoops Loses at St. Mary's, Becomes Fifth Seed in CAC

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – Of all the postseason scenarios that could have played out for the Frostburg State men's basketball team in its standings tussle with Wesley and York (Pa.), only one dropped the Bobcats to the fifth seed and removed the possibility of hosting a first round Capital Athletic Conference tournament game on Tuesday night. Unfortunately for Frostburg, that exact scenario played out on Saturday afternoon around the CAC.

Wesley and York both earned victories while the Bobcats dropped their regular season finale to conference-leading St. Mary's (Md.), 95-81. The results placed the teams in a three-way tie and Frostburg lost out due to its 1-3 combined record against the Wolverines and Spartans. The Bobcats will now travel to York for the Tuesday first round affair.

The Bobcats (13-12, 10-6) defeated St. Mary's in Frostburg last month, and another win would have clinched the third seed outright. But this Senior Day belonged to the Seahawks as they raced to a 23-4 lead in the opening eight minutes of action and cruised to a 47-13 lead on a DeVohn Gilmore layup with 3:05 remaining in the opening half.

Although down by 34 to the conference's top team, the Bobcats did anything but fold. The Bobcats hit three three-pointers - two from senior Troy Dockett - to close the half on a 12-2 run and trail, 49-25. Dockett finished with 13 points and was 3-of-6 from behind the arc.

St. Mary's scored the first six points of the second half to again push the lead to 30, but the Bobcats continued to chip away. Freshmen Tyler Logan and David Patrick scored the next 10 points over a two minute span to pull the Bobcats back to within 20. Logan came off the bench to score a game-high 18 points including two three pointers on that run. Patrick filled in as a starter for hobbled senior Bradley Nunn and poured in 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting.

The game would get even tighter. After a Chris Hutchinson layup ended the run, Frostburg started a more extended one, outscoring St. Mary's 20-6 over the next seven minutes to reduce the deficit to single digits, 63-55, on a DeSean Antoine three. He finished with six points and three assists off the bench.

After a Seahawk three-pointer, Logan answered right back with his own three to again drop the deficit to eight points with 8:43 remaining. But that would be as close as the spirited run would take the Bobcats. St. Mary's responded with a 14-4 run in four minutes to put the game out of reach.

Senior Maurice Williams was the fourth Bobcat to reach double figures, scoring 17 points on 6-of-10 shooting.

The Bobcats will now play at York on Tuesday in the opening round of the CAC tournament.
