Bobcats Grind Out Win Over Marymount

FROSTBURG, Md. - Frostburg State struggled to score points down the stretch in the second half, so the Bobcats relied on defense to carry them to a slim 53-52 victory over Marymount in Capital Athletic Conference action, Wednesday.

FSU (13-11, 10-5) used a late block and a key Marymount turnover to grab a victory and move into sole possession of third place. While the playoff picture is still up in the air, Frostburg can clinch third place with a win over St. Mary's on Saturday. However, if the Bobcats lose to St. Mary's, they could wind up in either third, fourth or fifth place.

Frostburg held a 10-point lead, its largest of the game, with 8:29 to play in the second half, but Marymount slowly climbed back into it and a traditional three-point play with 4:54 showing tied the game for the Saints at 47-47.

Junior DeSean Antoine hit a jumper at 3:25 and freshman David Patrick hit a layup at 2:28 to give the hosts a four-point edge, 53-49. It would be the final points of the night for the Bobcats.

Over the next minute, the Saints hit three free throws to pull within one point, 53-52, but they would also have trouble scoring points down the stretch.

After several missed shots by both teams in the final minute of play, Marymount had possession with 11 seconds left on the clock. After a timeout, a Marymount layup was rejected out of bounds by junior Kwambina Coker and the Saints turned the ball over on the inbounds play to give the Bobcats the win.

Senior Maurice Williams led the Bobcats in scoring for the fourth-straight game with 24 points, behind a 12-of-13 effort from the foul line. As a team, FSU shot just 29.5 percent (18-of-61) from the floor.

The Saints had three players in double figures, led by 13 points from Timothy Brisco. Jesse Konadu had 12 points and John Magnani grabbed 11 rebounds. Marymount shot 29.2 percent (14-of-48)  from the field.

Frostburg State led by as many as eight points in the opening stanza, but Marymount rebounded for a one-point lead with 2:08 to play. The Saints hit a free throw with 16 seconds left to move ahead by two, 22-20, but senior Troy Dockett hit a three-pointer to send the Bobcats into the locker room up one, 23-22.

Frostburg State closes out its regular season at St. Mary's (Md.) this Saturday with a 4:00 pm.
