Bobcats Fall in Semifinals to York

FROSTBURG, Md. – In a wild and energetic Capital Athletic Conference Tournament semifinal match, the Frostburg State University men’s soccer team suffered a heartbreaking 4-3 loss to York in double overtime, Thursday evening.

Box Score

After FSU (12-2-4) knotted the game in the final minute of regulation, York (16-2-2) scored the golden goal at 103:33 to push itself into the CAC Championship game on Saturday. Meanwhile, the Bobcats await a bid to the ECAC Tournament.

York jumped out to a 2-0 lead and forced Frostburg to rally for much of the contest.

Frostburg appeared to grab a 1-0 lead at 15:47 when a Michael Cronauer header off a corner kick, appeared to touch the back of the net. However, the attempt was never ruled a goal, and rather a save for Spartan keeper Jesse Derksen, and play continued at 0-0.

York got on the board in the 34th minute when Antonio Bua fired a low shot into the far corner of the net past a diving Abiye Jack for a 1-0 advantage. The Spartans added their second goal at 39:22 when Matt Delong gathered a loose ball in front of the net and scored for the 2-0 lead.

The Bobcats got on the board and grabbed a bit of momentum with just over three minutes to go in the opening half.  Following a York foul near midfield, senior Ryan Russell sent a long free kick towards the net that was redirected past Derksen by Chris Jones as the hosts cut the deficit to 2-1 at halftime.

Bua struck again for the first goal of the second period at 65:44 as he blasted a shot into the left side of the net for a 3-1 edge.

Frostburg scored the final two goals in regulation to send the match to overtime. York was whistled for a foul inside the 18 at 72:33 and Bobcat senior Shawn Baker knocked home a penalty kick as FSU again cut the deficit to one, 3-2.

The game remained in favor of the Spartans as the game clock ticked closer and closer to zero. With just one minute left in the second period, Bobcat junior Pablo Torrano headed the game tying goal into the left side of the net, squeezing it past Derksen to tie the match at 3-3. At first, the goal was waived off, but after the referees convened on the field, FSU was awarded the tying score.

After the first overtime expired without a goal, despite two shots from either squad, York scored on the only shot in the second overtime. Daniel Baxter slid a cross from the end line to the top of the six-yard box to a charging Brendan Saberton, who kicked of the ball into the right side of the net for the win.

The game was an even 16-16 in shots through the first three frames, until the final goal handed the visitors a 17-16 edge. FSU held a 4-2 in corner kicks. Jack made six saves for the Bobcats while Derksen finished with five for York.
