Men's Soccer Draws with York (Pa.)

YORK, Pa. – The Frostburg State men's soccer team battled to a hard-fought 1-1 tie with Capital Athletic Conference foe, 14th-ranked York (Pa.), Wednesday evening.

Box Score

With the tie, the Bobcats move to 10-1-4 and 2-1-2 in the CAC while York (Pa.) moves to 12-2-2 and 4-0-1 in the league.

Senior forward Ryan Russell notched the game's equalizer in the 82nd minute to tie the game at 1-1. Senior keeper Abiye Jack sent the ball the length of the field on a free kick and placed it perfectly in front of the net for Russell who chipped it in over the hands of the Spartans' keeper.

The Russell goal forced overtime as the Spartans could not convert on a final scoring opportunity in the last minute of regulation.

Each overtime period went back and forth offensively for the two teams, but neither could find the back of the net for the game winner. Russell had his final good scoring chance just 13 seconds into the second overtime period but YCP goalie, Jesse Derksen made a great play on the ball to keep the game knotted.

YCP had its final good scoring opportunity in the final seven seconds of the first overtime period but Jack turned away a hard shot from Justin Facer.

The Spartans scored their only goal of the game in the 41st minute when Jake Hower slipped the ball past Jack off a pass from Matt Yackel.

Jack made 11 saves in the contest while Derksen needed just four. YCP out-shot the Bobcats 23-7 and held a 13-0 advantage in corner kicks.

"The team stayed organized and executed our game plan," stated Bobcat coach Keith Byrnes. "We played hard for the full 110:00 minutes and I am happy with the result. To come away with a road tie, especially against a nationally-ranked team in the CAC, is a good result for us. We played well and will build on this going into our final league match."

Frostburg returns to action when the Bobcats host Marymount on Saturday, Oct. 20 for their final league match at 5:00 pm.
