SALISBURY, Md. – The Frostburg State women's basketball team had its chances but fell to intrastate rival Salisbury, 65-64, in overtime Saturday afternoon. Sophomore Elizabeth Erickson led the Bobcats with 17 points, while senior Meische Cox pulled down 11 rebounds.
The teams took turns with the lead in the opening half and went into the intermission tied at 29-29. Salisbury hit the first shot of the second half and did not trail for the entire half. Though Frostburg (4-10, 2-4) managed to tie the score on six separate occasions, the Bobcats could not push ahead.
The sixth - and final - tie of the second half came with 1:42 to play when sophomore Elaina Hummel hit a jumper to tie the score at 55-55. Frostburg had three chances to take the lead and could not get a go-ahead basket to drop. Salisbury had the final shot of regulation, but Anna Hackett missed a jumper with six seconds to play.
The Bobcats took their first lead since the 5:59 mark of the first half on their opening possession of overtime on a Brynn Arnone bucket. Hackett made up for that miss at the end of regulation by scoring all 10 of Salisbury's points in overtime. Frostburg hung tough, though, and Hummel hit a three-pointer to pull Frostburg to within one at 63-62 with 46 seconds to play.. Hackett scored the final two of those 10 on the Sea Gulls' next possession to push the lead to 65-62. Erickson hit a layup with eight seconds on the clock, but that would be as close as the Bobcats would come.
Hummel finished with 13 points and six assists while Arnone had 10 points and three rebounds. Freshman RJ James had nine points, four assists and three rebounds.
The Bobcats continue Capital Athletic Conference action Wednesday at Stevenson at 6:00 p.m.
